Retail Trade - July 2010

In July, seasonally adjusted (SA) sales in retail trade including automotive segment decreased month-on-month by 1.3% at constant prices and increased by 2.1% in the year-on-year comparison. The y-o-y decrease of seasonally non-adjusted sales by 1.0% was influenced by lower sale of assortments partially depending on the number of working days (this year, there were two working days less than in 2009), i.e. non-food goods and automotive fuel in specialised stores.

With seasonal, calendar and working day adjustment sales in retail trade including automotive segment decreased in July by 1.3%, at constant prices, m-o-m, and increased by 2.1% in the year-on-year comparison (after only working days adjustment by 2.6%). Seasonally non adjusted sales decreased by 1.0%, y-o-y, partially also due to the lower number of working days (-2). The biggest contribution to the y-o-y decrease came from sale of non-food goods and automotive fuels in specialised stores (both -1.1 p.p.), while retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco contributed to moderation of the fall (+0.7 p.p.) together with sale of motor vehicles (+0.8 p.p.; see Table 2).

Seasonally adjusted sales in sale and repair of motor vehicles (CZ-NACE 45) decreased by 5.3% at constant prices, m-o-m, while in the year-on-year comparison they increased by 8.3%. Seasonally non-adjusted sales increased, y-o-y, by 1.7%, of which the sale of motor vehicles increased by 3.6% and maintenance and repair of motor vehicles decreased by 8.1%. The slowdown of the growth of sale of motor vehicles compared to previous months was partially related to the end of accelerated depreciation of tangible assets for entrepreneurs effective from July.

In retail sale including sale of automotive fuel (CZ-NACE 47) seasonally adjusted sales increased, m-o-m, already for the second time in a row, this time by 0.4%, although in the y-o-y comparison they decreased by 0.3%. Seasonally non-adjusted sales decreased by 2.0%, y-o-y, in which retail sale of automotive fuel in specialized stores dropped by 9.2% and non-food goods by 3.3%, while retail sale of food increased by 2.8%.

Contributions to the decrease of sales in retail trade came from the majority of the observed assortment groups of stores, most of them from the sale of automotive fuel (contribution to the decrease -1.5 p.p.) and retail sale of other household equipment in specialised stores (-0.8 p.p.). Sales increased only in retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet (+8.7%), in retail sale in non-specialised stores with food, beverages or tobacco predominating (+3.5%), in which big retail chains have the strongest influence (enterprises with 100+ employees reported an increase of sales by 5.9%).

The price deflator related to the corresponding period of the previous year was 101.2%. A marked price increase was recorded in the sale of automotive fuel (+14.8%), markedly smaller increase was reported for prices of pharmaceutical and medical goods (+1.2%). The biggest price drops were reported for prices of information and communication equipment (-7.3%), and second-hand goods (-6.0%).
