Retail Trade - September 2011




In September, sales in retail trade including automotive segment after seasonal and working day adjustment decreased at constant prices by 0.6%, month-on-month. Only working days adjusted sales decreased by 0.5%, year-on-year, the same as non-adjusted. The y-o-y decrease of sales was reflected in retail trade except of motor vehicles and motorcycles.

After seasonal and working day adjustment sales in retail trade including sale and repair of motor vehicles decreased at constant prices by 0.6% in September, m-o-m; only working days adjusted decreased by 0.5%, year-on-year. The same development was recorded also for non-adjusted sales. An overall y-o-y sales drop was influenced (at the same number of working days in 2011 and 2010) by drop of sale in retail trade. On the contrary, growth in the automotive segment contributed to slackening of the fall (see Table 2).

Seasonally adjusted sales in sale and repair of motor vehicles (CZ-NACE 45) decreased by 1.1% at constant prices, m-o-m; in the year-on-year comparison, both adjusted for working days and non-adjusted increased by 2.4%. Non-adjusted sales for sale of motor vehicles (including spare parts) increased by 3.7%, y-o-y, while for maintenance and repair of motor vehicles they dropped by 5.4%.

In retail sale including sale of automotive fuel (CZ-NACE 47) seasonally adjusted sales at constant prices decreased by 0.4%, m-o-m; working days adjusted dropped by 1.7%, y-o-y, the same as non-adjusted. Non-adjusted sales for automotive fuel decreased by 4.6%, y-o-y, for non-food goods dropped by 1.5% and for food by 0.7%, y-o-y.

Sales dropped in most of the assortment groups of stores. Besides the already mentioned drop of sale of automotive fuel, also retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods in specialise stores dropped (-6.5%). The decrease was influenced especially by a high comparison basis of the previous year. Sales in retail sale in non-specialised stores with food, beverages or tobacco predominating decreased by 0.8% (sales in enterprises with 100+ employees in this group increased by 1.0%). Sales drop was recorded also in other retail sale in non-specialised stores (-2.1%), retail sale of cultural and recreation goods in specialised stores (-1.8%), retail sale of other household equipment in specialised stores (-1.5%), and sale of dispensing chemist, medical and orthopaedic goods, cosmetic and toilet articles in specialised stores (-1.0%). Growth of sales was recorded only in retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores (+9.0%), retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet (+6.1%), and retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco in specialised stores (+0.2%).

The price deflator related to the corresponding period of the previous year was 102.4% and it was influenced mainly by higher prices of automotive fuel and food. On the contrary, the deepest price falls were in retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores (-11.3%).

Sales at constant prices for the whole third quarter of 2011 in retail trade including automotive segment remained on the level of 2010 (with the same number of working days in Q3 2011 and Q3 2010). In the automotive segment, sales increased by 3.5%, in retail trade alone (including sale of automotive fuel) they dropped by 1.4%. Sales for food dropped by 2.6%, for automotive fuel by 2.3% and for non-food goods by 0.2%.
