Producer price indices - February 2010




In February 2010, agricultural and industrial producer prices decreased both by 0.3%. Construction work and market services prices increased both by 0.1%.
In comparison to February 2009, agricultural and industrial producer prices and market services prices were lower by 5.6%, 2.0% and 1.0%, respectively. Construction work prices increased by 0.3%.

Monthly changes

Agricultural producer prices decreased by 0.3% in total. Prices of crop products fell by 1.6% especially due to lower prices of hops (-43%). Higher were prices of potatoes (+2.0%), cereals (+2.8%), oil plants (+4.8%) and vegetables (+18.8%). Prices of animal products increased by 1.0%, prices of milk by 3.1%, eggs by 5.1% and cattle for slaughter by 0.7%). In contrast, prices of pigs for slaughter dropped by 2.4%.

Industrial producer prices decreased by 0.3% (+0.5% in January). The most marked price drop was registered in ‘food products, beverages and tobacco’ (-1.1%), ‘basic metals, fabricated metal products’ (-1.2%) and ‘rubber and plastic products’ (-0.6%). Prices went up particularly in ‘coke, refined petroleum products’ (+1.2%), ‘chemicals and chemical products’ and ‘electrical equipment’ (+0.8% both).

Construction work prices rose by 0.1%, construction material input prices fell by 0.1%.

Market services prices in the business sphere grew by 0.1%, affected by price increase in advertising and market research services (+3.0%) and employment services (+2.1%). Prices in insurance, real estate services and services to buildings and landscape fell identically by 0.7%. On the decrease were prices in architectural and engineering services (-1.0%). Market services prices excluding advertising services fell in total by 0.3%.

Annual changes

Agricultural producer prices were down by 5.6% (-6.3% in January). Prices of crop products fell by 11.1%, mainly due to price decreases in oil plants (-10.6%), cereals (-11.7%), potatoes (-12.7%) and hops (-31.4%). In contrast, higher were prices of fruit (+5.4%) and vegetables (+33.1%). For the first time since September 2008, animal products prices increased (+0.5%). Increases were registered for prices of eggs (+10.6%) and milk (+6.3%). On the decrease were prices of cattle for slaughter (-2.1%), poultry (-2.8%) and pigs for slaughter (-8.6%).

Industrial producer prices went down by 2.0% (-1.5% in January). The most marked influence on the fall of the total index had a price decrease in ‘basic metals, fabricated metal products’ (-13.3%), ‘food products, beverages and tobacco’ (-3.8%) and ‘transport equipment’ (-7.7%). Prices went up primarily in ‘coke, refined petroleum products’ (+27.8%) and ‘chemicals and chemical products’ (+17.5%).
Among the main industrial groupings the biggest decrease was reported for prices of ‘capital goods’ (-4.6%); the largest increase was recorded in ‘energy’ (+4.0%).

Construction work prices were up by 0.3% (like in January). Construction material input prices were down by 3.1% (-2.9% in January).

Market services prices in the business sphere in total were down by 1.0%. Decreasing were prices in advertising and market research services (-7.7%), real estate services (-2.8%), insurance (-1.5%), freight transport (-2.6%) and architectural and engineering services (-1.3%). In contrast, higher prices were recorded in employment services (+12.6%) and computer programming, consultancy (+2.9%). Market services prices excluding advertising services decreased by 0.3%.

Industrial producer prices in the EU – January 2010*

According to the Eurostat News Release, industrial producer prices in EU27, increased by 0.9% (+0.1% in December 2009) month-on-month. Among Member States for which data are available, the highest increases in the total index were recorded in Malta (+17.2%), Denmark (+3.9%), Finland and Sweden (+1.9% both). Prices in Germany rose by 0.8%. Decreases were observed only in Slovakia (-1.7%), Latvia (-0.5%), the Netherlands (-0.3%) and Ireland (-0.2%).

Producer prices in EU27 rose by 0.1% in January (-1.5% in December 2009), year-on-year. The highest increases were observed in Denmark (+7.6%), the United Kingdom (+4.7%) and Romania (+3.7%). The biggest drops were observed in Latvia (-9.8%), Lithuania (-5.6%), Slovakia (-5.5%) and Germany (-3.4%).
