Construction - February 2013

In February 2013 the construction output grew by 2.3%, year-on-year (y-o-y). The increase was partially affected by the low comparison basis of February 2012. The planning and building control authorities granted by 5.8% less building permits, y-o-y, and the approximate value of permitted constructions dropped by 9.9%, y-o-y. The number of started dwellings was down by 19.9%, y-o-y, and the number of completed dwellings decreased by 0.6%, y-o-y.

In February 2013 the construction output increased by 2.3%, y-o-y. The working days adjusted construction output in February 2013 was by 3.0% up, y-o-y. February 2013 was by one working and simultaneously calendar day shorter than the same month of 2012. The seasonally adjusted construction output in February 2013 was by 3.2% higher, month-on-month (m-o-m). The production in building construction increased by 2.2% (contribution +1.7 percentage points (p.p.)), y-o-y, and the production of civil engineering construction grew by 2.7% (contribution +0.6 p.p.), y-o-y. The good result of the construction production was partially affected by the low comparison basis of February 2012 when extremely low temperatures (average temperature in February 2012 was by 4.1 °C lower than the long-term average) halted construction works at certain construction sites and thus construction production recorded a drop by 16.3% at that time. The construction output from this year beginning to the end of February 2013 plummeted by 38.7% compared to the same period of 2008, the year of boom.

The average registered number of employees ¹⁾ in construction enterprises with 50+ employees fell by 6.9%, y-o-y, in February 2013. Their average monthly nominal wage decreased by 2.1%, y-o-y, and reached CZK 25 582.

In February 2013 the number of building permits granted decreased by 5.8%, y-o-y; the planning and building control authorities granted 6 384 building permits. The approximate value of the permitted constructions attained CZK 19.0 billion and dropped by 9.9% compared to the same period of 2012.

The number of dwellings started in February 2013 dropped by 19.9%, y-o-y, and attained 1 477 dwellings. The number of dwellings started in multi-dwelling buildings plummeted by 41.3% and that of dwellings started in family houses decreased by 16.4%.

The number of completed dwellings fell by 0.6%, y-o-y, in February 2013 and was 2 079 dwellings. The number of completed dwellings in multi-dwelling buildings jumped up by 77.3%. The number of completed dwellings in family houses decreased by 7.1%.

According to Eurostat the WDA (working days adjusted) construction output in the EU27 decreased by 8.0%, y-o-y, in January 2013. Building construction fell by 7.7% and civil engineering construction dropped by 9.5%. Eurostat shall release the data for February 2013 on 17 April 2013 (at 11:00 a.m.).

¹⁾ The registered number of employees indicator does not include: persons working under various contracts for work, working owners of enterprises, and cooperating household members, who do not have an employment contract. Data on the registered number of employees in construction also exclude agency workers, who have an employment contract, however, in other activity than construction.
